LUIS UMALI STUART

the grid is a discovery in language by way of tagalog verbs, english keywords, and simple set theory. it originates from two instances of the same perfect 2x2 permutation found lurking in the play of roots and affixes in tagalog verb phrases, appearing to evidence in language a deep semantic structure of a mathematical nature, to wit a repeating combinatorial structure underlying our verb-building.

"a very good piece of work... un analyse tres bonne e tres fine"

Tim Warner

"very impressive… fascinating stuff. I like the idea of recursive nesting of the grid, which would

make for great economy in underlying neural structure… I guess only a Tagalog speaker could tell, but it certainly persuades me."

"Wow! A great book!... I hope that your work with Tagalog will inspire someone to do the same

thing with English (and other languages)."

THE GRID

"a genuine discovery…"

Kie Zuraw

"a very thorough set of both syntactic and semantic features.  Linguists often leave this kind of thing incompletely worked out, but for technological applications in Natural Language

Processing it's often important to have a fuller set…"

"Great stuff, Louie! The creative juices haven't diminished in you at all."

THE GRID

"intriguing… I don’t think that linguists these days would find the formalism daunting; they are

used to much more."
