trail of the grid on the web
“i studied mathematics in my youth just when the digital age was aborning, learned about algebraic sets, groups, and rings, and my FORTRAN and BASIC on an IBM360 that i never laid my eyes on. it was in the ‘90s in my early forties, i would embark on a deep study of tagalog, my native tongue, drawn by what seemed strangely mathematical there, as if there were an elementary combinatorial order underlying the language. as I dug deeper over the years, a remarkable digital construction would take shape, what I lovingly call ‘the grid’.
“at the behest of nicole revel, research director (now emeritus) at france’s CNRS (national center for scientific research), i had opportunity to present the notion at CNRS villejuif and the INALCO (Institute of Oriental Languages) in Paris in 2002, and then later at the 10th International Conference of Austronesian Languages held in Palawan in 2006.

“later i would write two textbooks on the progress of my findings.
“the first, THE TAGALOG GRID: a discovery in language by way of tagalog verbs was peer-reviewed and published by the de la salle university (manila) in 2012, now out of print but available in a 2010 version as an ebook, the secret grid of language: a deep structure surfaces in tagalog at http://lulu.com
“the second, TO BABEL AND BEYOND: how language is digitally coded in the brain (2014) is also an ebook at http://lulu.com. this is an elaboration of the first book—with an application exercise on a sample English text, the Babel story in King James—and attempts to contextualize the grid within then current scholarship.
meanwhile in 2010 i discovered lingbuzz, an open access linguistics archive, where i have posted since a quartet of reports beginning with an abridgement of the first book above.
https://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/000996 THE GRID OF LANGUAGE (2010)
https://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/002823 THE AMAZING RULE OF FOUR (2016)
https://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/005087 THE PERFECTION OF UM (2020)
https://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz/006619 THE ORIGIN OF LANGUAGE may 2022
of marginal curiosity is a website on wix (2016) to invite gridders to the grid, but i lost the password and soon abandoned it after moving to quezon full-time, where the internet signal is poor.

in 2023 i rewrite and update the last of the lingbuzz quarter into a full-fledged ebook THE ORIGINS OF LANGUAGE available at google play. see the youtube announcement.

next in line, in 2024, is THE BOOK OF THE GRID, a compilation of all things past for the guidance of future gridders.
